About Goshin Kai School of Self Defense
Goshin Kai School of Self Defense was originally opened on September 27th, 1992 in downtown Toronto, Ontario.
It originally operated out of the Bloor JCC at the intersection of Spadina and Bloor and later moved to the University Settlement Recreation Centre across the street from City TV at Queen and John where they shared the Dojo (school) space with an Aikido School.
The Dojo operated Downtown for over 16+ years and later would open a 2nd Dojo in North York, Goshin Kai (East) and is run by the senior black belts there. The main (Hombu) Dojo (Goshin Kai Burlington) would re-locate to the Fitness Firm on Plains Road, Burlington, Ontario and classes are run by the founder of Kyoshin Ryu Jiu-Jitsu which is considered a Traditional Japanese style. It's design and focus is a mix of both traditional and modern self defense and combative applications.
Predominantly a Jiu-Jitsu School, Goshin Kai would later begin teaching separate Shotokan Karate Classes as well, as our Founder also taught Karate at the University of Toronto Karate Club (Senior Sempai) for over 14 years under Tominaga Sensei and continued to train and maintain close ties with them. As such, the Goshin Kai School of Self Defense was also a recognized Dojo with JinbuKai Canada, the National Karate Association and Karate Ontario.
Goshin Kai School of Self Defense today is focused on Kyoshin Ryu Jiu-Jitsu training and is a member in good standing with the Ontario Jiu-Jiu Association (OJA), The New International JuJutsu Federation, KyoshinKan and the Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Association.
Classes are taught in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, yet are also fast paced and challenging with traditional Japanese over-tones. Traditional weapons (Including Bokken) are taught, starting at the intermediate level. Character development is highly regarded. Classes start and end with meditation.
Students are encouraged to progress at their own pace and receive individual attention from the Dojo instructors.
Goshin Kai Instructors have undergone many years of jiu-jitsu training, directly under the founder, and have also undergone vigorous testing. All Instructors have completed the instructor program where they learn to teach others and are qualified in First Aid.
